Lebanon’s ongoing war has created a devastating reality for migrants, including Nepalese workers stranded in conflict-torn Beirut. These women—caught between the violence of war and systemic exploitation—face unimaginable challenges every single day.
Among them is Maya, a domestic worker who left Nepal 15 years ago hoping to secure a better future for her children. Instead, she became trapped in Lebanon’s restrictive Kafala system, where employers act as sponsors with the power to control migrants’ legal status, restrict job mobility, and even limit their ability to return home. Maya endured years of abuse and exploitation. When she finally escaped her employer, she became undocumented, making it nearly impossible to leave the country without paying heavy government fines or navigating an extremely complex legal system. Today, she lives in constant fear, with minimal access to food, healthcare, or safe shelter—desperate to escape the war zone.
The situation is worsening by the day. Recently, a 37-year-old Ethiopian migrant died of a heart attack brought on by extreme stress and fear. She leaves behind two children with no father figure to care for them. Another migrant narrowly survived a bombing near her workplace. These are only a few of the many heartbreaking stories. We have been able to reach 21 women so far who urgently need support, but there are likely many more who are isolated or too afraid to seek help.
Despite these unimaginable circumstances, the resilience of these women is extraordinary. They have created informal support networks, sharing what little they have just to survive. But they cannot do this alone—they need urgent assistance to stay alive and, ultimately, to return home.
